ANZ names CFO Shayne Elliott as new CEO

ANZ, the nation’s third largest bank, has appointed Shayne Elliott to replace Mike Smith as chief executive, effective from January 1.

Mr Elliott pipped other internal candidates including NZ boss David Hisco, while ASX chief Elmer Funke Kupper had widely been touted as a potential external choice to replace Mr Smith.

Mr Elliott, the lender’s chief financial officer, was the hot internal favourite to replace Mr Smith, who had previously flagged his intention to exit from the top job next year.
